The internal and external policies – including the challenge to the democratic process in the past to current incursions and threats – weaken not only national and global legal frameworks. But that’s not all.
They jeopardize the core idea of a civilized world.
The moral purpose of a functioning society is to forestall the stronger from attacking and exploiting the less powerful. Failing that, we would be trapped in a conflict of all against all where might makes right could survive.
This ideal lies at the center of the Declaration and Constitution. This is also the foundation of the modern framework of international relations championed by the America, which stresses multilateralism, democracy, individual liberties, and the legal authority.
Yet, it is a vulnerable ideal, easily violated by those who choose to misuse their authority. Upholding it necessitates that the powerful have the moral fortitude to refrain from seeking temporary advantages, and that the public demand responsibility if they don't.
Absolute power does not equal right. It results in turmoil, disruption, and conflict.
Each instance individuals, companies, or nations that are richer and more powerful target and use those that are weaker, the fabric of society unravels. Should such behavior are allowed to continue, the system fails. If not stopped, the world can descend into disorder and conflict. History provides ample precedent.
Our current reality is a society and world with deepening divides. Authority and resources are increasingly centralized than in recent memory. This encourages the powerful to leverage their position against the disadvantaged because they perceive themselves as untouchable.
The resources of a handful of tycoons is almost beyond comprehension. The reach of major corporations in technology, energy, and aerospace spans numerous countries. Advanced technology is could centralize economic and political clout further. The destructive power of the world's largest nations is without parallel in human history.
Enabled by a compliant faction and a pliant high court, the presidency has been made into the supreme and answerable-to-none instrument of state power in recent memory.
Combine these factors and you grasp the looming crisis.
A clear connection ties earlier transgressions to ongoing menaces. Each were premised on the hubris of invincibility.
One observes a similar pattern in other global contexts: in military conflicts, in expansive ambitions, and in the worldwide exploitation by powerful corporate entities.
But, unfettered might does not establish right. It produces fragility, upended order, and armed conflict.
History shows that frameworks designed to limit the influential also protect them. If these guardrails are removed, their insatiable demands for increased control and resources eventually cause their collapse – taking down their corporations, nations, or empires. And risk global conflict.
This blatant lawlessness will cast a long shadow over America and the global community – and the very idea of civilized conduct – for years to come.
