The Hamilton Island Resort, one of the Popular Queensland Getaway on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Sold by American Investment Giant.

An iconic resort island located on the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a American private equity firm in a deal said to be worth 1.2 billion Australian dollars.

“We are honored to build on the legacy and commitment of the Oatley family has established in the center of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” said a senior representative.

The Reported Sale

The New York-headquartered, the investment firm Blackstone – which also owns the hospitality group Crown Resorts – announced it had signed an deal to purchase the island resort from the Oatley family, subject to customary approvals from regulators.

The family issued a comment noting they were pleased with the new owners of an island that holds a “unique position in the hearts of many Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.

The Island's Size and Amenities

Positioned almost 900km north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, Hamilton spans over 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.

Approximately 30% of the land is built upon, including a substantial array of facilities:

Five separate hotels
More than 20 restaurants and bars
Twenty shops and retail spaces
An championship 18-hole golf course on neighboring Dent Island
A marina and a commercial airport

Hamilton Island is noted as a major job provider in the Whitsunday region, supporting a large on-island community and staff, as well as a wide network of regional partners, vendors, and local businesses.

Historical Context at Ownership

The deceased Robert Oatley, a well-known yachtsman and vintner, first bought the resort for $200 million in the year 2003 after spying the island from aboard a yacht while sailing through the Whitsunday passage.

The island's major development phase first began in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was characterized by galvanised iron huts and more humble quarters that housed Australian vacationers from inland areas and from the south.

Blackstone has ownership of hotels and luxury resorts in multiple nations, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.

The Whitsunday region is the traditional lands and seas of the Ngaro people. Its name comes from Captain James Cook, who sailed the Endeavour through the archipelago on June 3, 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
