Nor will you note that several of the Dane's goals were scored versus weaker national sides, or that his national team is far superior to Slovenia and generates many more chances. If you manage online for a major brand, raw interaction is your livelihood, United are the prime target, and context is the thing to avoid.

So the cycle of content spins. Your next task is to sift through a 44-minute interview featuring Peter Schmeichel and extract the part where he describes the signing of Sesko "strange". The heart of fall has long been one of my preferred periods to watch football. The leaves swirl, the wind turns, squads and strategies are still fresh, everything is new and yet patterns are emerging. Key players of the coming months are staking their claims. The summer market is closed. No one is mentioning the multiple trophies yet. All teams are in contention. At this precise point, all is possibility.

However, for similar reasons, this period has also been one of my most disliked times to read about football. Because although nothing has yet been settled, something must always be getting settled. Jack Grealish is reborn. Florian Wirtz has been a crushing disappointment. Is Antoine Semenyo the top performer in the league right now? We need a decision now.

Sesko as Patient Zero

And for numerous reasons, Sesko feels like the archetype in this respect, a player caught between football's opposing, non-negotiable forces. The imperative to withhold definitive judgment, to let layers of technical texture and strategic understanding to mature. And the demand to produce permanent verdicts, a constant stream of takes and jokes, context-free criticisms and pointless comparisons, a square that can never truly be solved.

I do not propose to offer a in-depth evaluation of Sesko's stint at United to date. The guy has started on four occasions in the top flight in a wildly inconsistent team, scored two goals, and taken a mere of 116 contacts with the ball. What exactly are we evaluating? Team social media, online personalities, anonymous X accounts with a oddly high number of fake followers: everybody with a vested interest is now essentially aligned along the identical rules, an ecosystem explicitly nosed towards controversy.

The Psychological Toll

Scroll, scroll, tap, scroll. What is happening to us? Are we aware, on any level, what this endless stream of aggravation is doing to our brains? Quite apart from the essential weirdness of playing in the middle of it all, knowing on a bizarre chain-reaction level that every single thing about them is now essentially material, commodity, public property to be repackaged and exchanged.

And yes, partly this is because United are United, the entity that keeps nourishing the cycle, a major institution that must constantly be generating the strong emotions. However, partly this is a temporary malaise, a swing of opinion most clearly and cruelly glimpsed at this time of year, roughly four weeks after the transfer market shut. All summer long we have been coveting players, eulogising them, salivating over them. Yet, only a handful of games later, many of those very players are now being dismissed as failures. Is it time to worry about a new signing? Did Arsenal actually need their striker necessary? What was the point of Randal Kolo Muani?

The Bigger Picture

It seems fitting that he meets Liverpool on the weekend: a team at once on a long unbeaten run at home in the Premier League and somehow in their own situation of feverish crisis, like submitting a a report on someone who went to the store half an hour ago. Defensively suspect. Their star finished. Alexander Isak an expensive flop. The coach losing his hair.

Maybe we have failed to understand the way the narrative of football has begun to supplant football the actual game, to influence the way we watch it, an entire sport reoriented around talking points and reaction, an activity that happens in the background while we browse through our phones, incapable to detach from the saline drip of takes and more takes. Perhaps Sesko taking the hit right now. But in a way, everyone is sacrificing something in this process.
