Research Finds Polar Bear DNA Variations May Aid Adjustment to Global Heating

Researchers have detected changes in Arctic bear DNA that might help the creatures adjust to hotter climates. This study is believed to be the initial instance where a statistically significant connection has been established between rising temperatures and changing DNA in a free-ranging mammal species.

Global Warming Endangers Polar Bear Survival

Environmental degradation is imperiling the existence of Arctic bears. Projections show that a significant majority of them may vanish by 2050 as their snowy habitat melts and the weather becomes more extreme.

“The genome is the guidebook within every biological unit, guiding how an life form develops and develops,” stated the lead researcher, Dr. Alice Godden. “By examining these animals’ active genes to local environmental information, we observed that increasing temperatures seem to be causing a substantial increase in the activity of jumping genes within the south-east Greenland bears’ DNA.”

DNA Study Shows Key Changes

Scientists studied tissue samples taken from Arctic bears in different areas of Greenland and evaluated “jumping genes”: compact, movable segments of the DNA sequence that can affect how different genes work. The study looked at these genetic markers in correlation to temperatures and the associated variations in gene expression.

As regional weather and food sources shift due to transformations in habitat and prey forced by climate change, the DNA of the bears appear to be adapting. The group of polar bears in the most temperate part of the region exhibited more genetic shifts than the communities in colder regions.

Possible Survival Mechanism

“This discovery is important because it shows, for the first time, that a unique population of Arctic bears in the warmest part of Greenland are using ‘jumping genes’ to quickly alter their own DNA, which could be a critical survival mechanism against disappearing sea ice,” added Godden.

Conditions in the colder region are colder and less variable, while in the southern zone there is a more temperate and more open water environment, with significant weather swings.

DNA sequences in organisms mutate over time, but this evolution can be hastened by environmental stress such as a rapidly heating climate.

Nutritional Changes and Active DNA Areas

The study noted some intriguing DNA alterations, such as in regions associated to lipid metabolism, that could help Arctic bears persist when prey is unavailable. Animals in hotter areas had a greater proportion of terrestrial food intake compared with the lipid-rich, marine nutrition of Arctic bears, and the DNA of south-eastern bears seemed to be adapting to this change.

Godden elaborated: “We identified several genetic hotspots where these mobile elements were highly active, with some situated in the functional gene sections of the DNA, implying that the animals are undergoing fast, significant evolutionary shifts as they adapt to their vanishing sea ice habitat.”

Future Research and Protection Efforts

The following stage will be to examine different polar bear populations, of which there are numerous around the world, to determine if analogous modifications are taking place to their DNA.

This study could aid conserve the bears from disappearance. However, the experts noted that it was essential to slow global warming from accelerating by reducing the use of carbon-based fuels.

“We must not relax, this presents some hope but does not imply that Arctic bears are at any diminished threat of extinction. It remains crucial to be pursuing all measures we can to decrease global carbon emissions and mitigate global warming,” stated Godden.
